Should I replace my thermostat?
Although we do not have actual statistics to offer you, the reality is that the majority of service calls we run we find the thermostat is not the problem. In fact, the majority of thermostats we replace is because the customer requested it.
They do occasionally go bad but this should not be your first troubleshooting step.
Here's an analogy that demonstrates why:
You walk into a room and turn on the light switch but the light does not come on. Do you replace the light bulb or the switch? A thermostat is a switch that uses room temperature and your settings to turn on and off your equipment.
Should I install a programmble thermostat, to save money on my utility bills?
Since you are viewing this web site, then it can be said "technology is a wonderful thing."
However, there is caveat. Technology is a tool that must be applied appropriately. Programmable thermostats fall into this category and we ask that you take some things into consideration before choosing to purchase a programmable thermostat, especially if purchasing it for someone else.
Programmable thermostats are used to automatically change the temperature setting:
- when gone for consistent extended periods of the day.
- while sleeping.
They are not appropriate:
- for persons not comfortable with technology
- for persons who want to control the thermostat and thus manually override the program anyway
- for households that are active throughout the day
- for houses that are primarily empty for extended periods
Did you know? If you set back your thermostat 10 degrees when going to bed or leaving the house for more than 6 hours you have accomplished the same thing that a programmable thermostat does?
