How often should I replace my filter?
Manufacturers and Energy Conservation experts agree. If using disposable filters (this includes those expensive "hi-efficent" filters), you should replace them every month.
Other experts offer other advice, but the general consensus is that the furnace filter should be checked monthly and cleaned or replaced as needed. At the very least, they should be changed every three (3) months.
Why the discrepancy? Every home and household is different. A very active house with young children and pets will need to replace their filter more often than a more serene household of working adults.
"Replace or clean furnace filters once a month. Dirty filters restrict airflow and increase energy use." (~ California Energy Commission)
"The filter should be checked monthly until the appropriate interval has been established for your house and lifestyle." (~ Home Maintenance with Hank Spies on Focus 580 - A very well written article and worth a read).
BUT I HAVE SPACEGARD (OR AIR BEAR. OR HONEYWELL MEDIA AIR CLEANER).
Media Air Cleaners are not normal filters. However, the same principle of different households and different lifestyles still applies.
You should expect to replace your media at least once a year, but they should be checked after 6 to 9 months.
We generally suggest you make a habit of replacing your media at the beginning of Air Conditioning Season or Memorial Day.
